To je jedna od naj\u010de\u0161\u0107ih vaginalnih infekcija kod \u017eena. Postoji \u0161iroko rasprostranjeno uvjerenje da je bakterijska vaginoza spolno prenosiva bolest, no to nije uvijek slu\u010daj. Bakterijska vaginoza javlja se i kod \u017eena koje nisu imale seksualne odnose ili koje su godinama s istim partnerom.
