You’re not alone: over a third of women who go visit their doctor about a vaginal infection have thrush or candida, as the condition is also known. And if you’re one of the women who have had a recurring vaginal yeast infection, you don’t need to be told just how disruptive the symptoms and treatment side effects can be — or how hard it can be to cure it for good. So how can you treat a vaginal yeast infection?

Recognizing vaginal yeast infection symptoms

Yeast infections aren’t particularly dangerous, but they do have some very uncomfortable symptoms that can have a big impact on your day-to-day activities. Symptoms of thrush include:

Vaginal pain (especially during and after sexual intercourse)

Abnormal discharge (similar in appearance to cottage cheese)

Vaginal itches and irritation

Soreness and redness

However, having these symptoms doesn’t necessarily mean that you have thrush. Vaginal yeast infection symptoms can overlap with other conditions, such as bacterial vaginosis (BV) and some sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Each of these infections has a different cause, and therefore requires different treatment. The last thing you want is to make more problems for yourself (and maybe even your partner), so it’s important to consult your doctor or gynecologist first to find out what it is you need to treat.

What causes vaginal yeast infections?

Vaginal yeast infections are the result of an imbalance of your vaginal flora. The most common cause is an overabundance of a specific kind of yeast: Candida albicans. This is why vaginal yeast infections are also called ‘candida.’

So what causes this imbalance? For the majority of women, Candida albicans is always present in the vagina; it’s part of a healthy vaginal flora. However, it can run rampant and disrupt the balance of your vaginal flora. This happens when there is too much food available for the yeast: the sugar found in the cells of your vaginal wall.

Several things can cause an increase in sugar:

Entering the second half of your menstrual cycle

Use of birth control pills

Pregnancy

Diet (lots of sugar and dairy products)

The difference between yeast infections, BV and STDs

While they may have similar symptoms, BV and STDs have different underlying causes than vaginal yeast infections.

Whereas candida is caused by too much yeast, BV occurs when the wrong bacteria run rampant. If the wrong bacteria overwhelm the good bacteria (lactobacilli), you can develop BV. What causes this imbalance isn’t currently known.

STDs, on the other hand, have a variety of potential causes. Depending on the exact condition, it could be caused by a bacteria, a virus, or a parasite.

With so many possible underlying causes for your discomfort, it’s important that you consult your doctor or gynecologist before seeking treatment.

“Candida can be easily treated with antimycotics, although their effect does not stop the vaginal yeast infection from recurring”

Vaginal yeast infection treatment: your options

There are lots of different vaginal yeast infection treatments to choose from — another good reason to consult your physician. Doctors often prescribe antimycotics, but they’re far from the only option you have when it comes to vaginal yeast infection treatments.

Probiotics

Prebiotics

Antimycotic creams/tablets

Oral antimycotic therapy

And more

One reason you might want to look beyond antimycotics is that their side effects can be unpleasant:

Abdominal pain

Diarrhoea

Itching and burning

Feeling sick

Rash

Redness

If you are one of the 15% of women with a yeast infection which recurs several times a year, you don’t want to have to deal with these side effects in addition to the symptoms of thrush itself. Because while the primary thrush treatments are effective, they do not provide relief from the symptoms. Luckily there are plenty of products that can take care of this, such as sprays, creams and gels that can be used in combination with the primary treatment. If your symptoms don’t improve over time, it’s best to consult your doctor.

Vaginal yeast infection treatment that tackles symptoms and prevents recurrence

Do you want to avoid a recurring yeast infection?
